Why Your Competitors Are Beating You to Emergency Calls (And How to Fix It)

When a furnace dies at 6 p.m. on a Tuesday, your customer searches for help on their phone. If you're not visible in that moment, a competitor is.

The New Search Happens Before Google

Last Tuesday at 5:47 p.m., a homeowner in Burnaby had a furnace failure. The outside temperature was dropping. Their instinct wasn't to open a browser and type "HVAC near me." It was to pick up their phone and ask Siri, or open ChatGPT, or say "Hey Google, who can fix my furnace tonight?"

If your business shows up in that AI response, you get the call. If you don't, your competitor does—even if your Google ranking is higher.

This shift is real and accelerating. AI assistants are becoming the first layer of customer decision-making, especially for urgent trades work. Yet most local trade businesses—plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, garage door specialists—are still optimizing only for traditional Google search. They're invisible where their customers are actually looking.

Why Your Google Visibility Isn't Enough Anymore

Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT's web browsing, and Gemini's search integration all pull information from the web to answer customer questions. But they don't pull from your website the same way a human searcher does. They're looking for structured, direct, machine-readable answers.

A typical trade business website has beautiful photos of finished jobs, testimonials, and a contact form. But when an AI assistant crawls it looking for the answer to "Do you offer emergency service?" or "What's your service area?" or "How much does a furnace tune-up cost?"—that information might be buried in a PDF, hidden behind navigation menus, or written in ways a machine can't reliably parse.

Meanwhile, your competitor—or a national chain with a well-structured FAQ—gets cited in the AI response.

How to Become Visible in AI Results

1. Create a clear, simple FAQ section on your website.

Not buried in a blog. On your main service pages. Answer the exact questions your customers ask on the phone: - "Do you offer same-day service?" - "What areas do you service?" - "Do you charge for estimates?" - "What's included in a maintenance call?" - "Are you available on weekends?"

Keep answers to 2–3 sentences. Use plain language. An HVAC company in Vancouver might write:

*"Do you offer emergency service? Yes. We're available 24/7 for heating emergencies. Emergency calls are subject to a $150 dispatch fee, waived if you book a service call."*

That's the kind of answer an AI can find, cite, and recommend.

2. Organize your service list with pricing and details.

Instead of "Call for a quote," publish your typical service offerings with price ranges. A plumber might list: - Toilet repair: $150–$300 - Drain cleaning (under 20 ft): $250–$400 - Emergency call-out fee: $100 (waived with service)

AI assistants pull this data to answer "How much does a plumber charge for a toilet repair in BC?" If you're the only local option with transparent pricing, you're the recommendation.

3. Get your business data into structured formats.

Make sure your Google Business Profile is complete—hours, service areas, phone number, photos. Add schema markup to your website (your web person can do this in an hour). This tells AI assistants: "This is a plumbing business. These are their services. This is their coverage area."

4. Lean into your reviews and local reputation.

AI systems weight customer reviews heavily. A business with 50 reviews averaging 4.8 stars will be recommended over one with 5 reviews at 5 stars. Keep asking satisfied customers to leave reviews on Google and your local directories.

The Timing Advantage

The businesses implementing AEO now—in early 2025—have a 6–12 month window before their competitors catch up. Once every plumber and HVAC tech in Metro Vancouver has a structured FAQ and transparent pricing, the playing field levels again. But right now, being visible in AI results is a competitive advantage.

Your customer at 5:47 p.m. on a Tuesday isn't thinking about SEO rankings. They're asking a machine for help. Make sure that machine knows who you are.
